  • WELCOME

St James the Deacon is a welcoming, friendly church serving God and the community in Woodthorpe, Acomb Park and Foxwood, along with parts of Dringhouses West and Acomb within the city of York.

The Parish was formed in the 1950’s to meet the needs of new new housing being built in South West York and the current church built in 1970 with the Hall added in 2010.

We are the only church dedicated to James the Deacon, an Italian misionary who came to Yorkshire and Northumbria in the seventh century and ministered to the people there in dangerous circumstances.

We invite you to find out more through exploring this website and would love to welcome you in person to our church and hall.

  • The Revd JOHN HORTON, RIP

The Reverend John Horton has died in hospital on Tyneside on Sunday, 7 May, a few weeks after celebrating his 90th birthday.   He was the first Vicar of St James the Deacon in York where he served as its priest for 35 years, overseeing the birth of the parish and the building of its new church in Sherringham Drive which was consecrated in 1971.

He was born in Bradford, the son of a priest in 1917.   During World War 2, he was a Bevin Boy, working down the mines, before training for the priesthood at Mirfield.  After a curacy in the North East, he came to York as priest-in-charge of the emerging parish of St James the Deacon in 1958.   He became Vicar of the Parish in 1971 when it became a full parish.   He remained there until his retirement in 1993.

On his retirement, he moved back to Tyneside with Jean his wife whom he married in 1955 and survives him.   His brother, Christopher, who was Vicar of Grangetown and a canon of York Minster, died in 2014.
